Translation Memory (TM)

What Is Translation Memory (TM)?

Translation memory (TM) is a database that stores previously translated text segments so they can be reused in future translation projects. These segments are typically sentences or phrases that have already been translated and approved.

When similar or identical content appears again, the translation memory suggests the previous translation, allowing translators to reuse it rather than translating the text from scratch. This improves translation speed while maintaining consistency across multilingual content.

How Translation Memory Works

Translation memory systems store and retrieve translations based on segment matching.

Segment Storage Source text and its translated equivalent are stored as paired segments in a translation memory database.

Exact Matches When the same source text appears again, the system automatically suggests the previously translated version.

Fuzzy Matches If the text is similar but not identical, the translation memory suggests a partial match that translators can edit.

Continuous Learning As translators complete new work, additional segments are added to the translation memory, expanding the system’s knowledge over time.

Benefits of Translation Memory

Translation memory is a foundational component of modern localization workflows.

  • Reduces repetitive translation work
  • Improves consistency across projects and languages
  • Speeds up translation workflows
  • Helps maintain approved terminology and phrasing
  • Lowers overall translation costs for large content sets

These benefits become especially valuable for organizations that frequently update products, documentation, or marketing content.

Translation Memory in Enterprise Localization

Translation memory is commonly used in translation management systems and CAT tools to support multilingual content operations. Organizations with large volumes of recurring content, such as software interfaces, product documentation, and knowledge bases, benefit significantly from TM reuse.

As content evolves, translation memory helps maintain consistency across updates while accelerating the translation process.

AI-Powered Translation Memory

Modern AI-powered translation platforms extend traditional translation memory capabilities by combining TM with adaptive machine translation and human feedback.

LILT’s AI-powered translation platform integrates translation memory with adaptive machine translation to help organizations translate content faster while preserving consistency across multilingual products, documentation, and support resources.
