How to read the table. Types 1 through 3 give you translation. Types 4 and 5 give you a translation program, which is the difference between having translated text and having a multilingual website that stays current. This is the entry most buyers get wrong, so it is worth being precise. Google Translate is excellent at what it does, and what it does is translate pages for the person reading them.

Limitation, and it is a significant one: you cannot use free Google Translate to publish a translated website. The embeddable Website Translator widget was retired for commercial sites in 2019 and now survives only as a restricted signup for government, nonprofit, and academic sites focused on COVID-19 response. Chrome's translation is controlled entirely by the visitor, who decides whether, when, and into what language a page gets translated. There is no translated URL for you to rank in search, link to, share, or measure, and you have no control over terminology, brand voice, or accuracy on content that matters.
If you want a Google-powered translated site you control, the option is the paid Google Cloud Translation API. It returns strings, not a website, so the routing, hreflang tags, URL structure, and publishing pipeline remain yours to build.
4. DeepL
Type: MT engine with a workflow layer. Best for: Teams that want high-quality raw AI translation, particularly across European language pairs, with light workflow.
DeepL built its reputation on output quality and that reputation is still deserved. It now supports over 110 languages, and with Translation Flow it has moved beyond a pure API into workflow: task tracking, reviewer invites, translation memory, glossaries, and connectors for Adobe Experience Manager and Contentful.

The model is also static rather than adaptive: it does not learn from your corrections, so quality on your terminology stays where it starts, and you are working within DeepL's models rather than bringing your own.

Lokalise is the most developer-oriented platform here, with dedicated workflows for engineers, product managers, and designers. If localization at your company is owned by product rather than marketing, it will feel more natural than the marketing-first platforms.

Limitation: Lokalise states on its own security page that "on-premises and private cloud deployments are not supported," and data is hosted in EU-region AWS. If your program requires content to stay inside your environment, or data residency outside the EU, that rules it out regardless of its other strengths. For teams without those constraints it is a strong platform, and it holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.
6. Phrase
Type: Localization platform. Best for: Software and product teams running continuous localization through a CI/CD pipeline.
Phrase markets itself as an enterprise "Language Intelligence Platform," and its strongest fit in practice is developer-led and product teams. Its string management, over-the-air updates, CLI, and GitHub and Figma integrations are built around the release cycle, and it routes across a large set of machine translation engines with automatic engine selection.

Limitation: Phrase is cloud-only. Its own security page describes a public-cloud, multi-tenant architecture as a deliberate design choice, and data residency is limited to Ireland or the United States. It holds ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type I, with Type II expected in 2026, and states that it does not knowingly process protected health information. How to choose a website translation service
Start here: which type do you need?
Answer these three questions before comparing any vendors.
Do you need to own the translation, or just make the page readable? If visitors occasionally arriving from an unlocalized market simply need to understand the page, browser translation already handles that and costs nothing. If the translated page needs to rank in search, carry your brand voice, or be something you can point a customer at, you need to own it, and free reader-side translation cannot do that.
Is this a project or a program? A site you translate once and revisit annually does not need platform infrastructure, and paying for it is waste. A site you publish to weekly needs continuous localization, where translation triggers automatically on content change. Match the commitment model to your publishing cadence, not to your current content volume.
Who owns it internally? If localization sits with product or engineering, developer-first platforms fit the way your team already works. Deployment model and data residency. Ask this first, because it is the only criterion that removes options outright rather than trading off against others. If content cannot leave your environment, every cloud-only platform and every proxy architecture is out of scope. Establish what is available, private cloud, on-premises, air-gapped, before you evaluate anything else, or you will restart procurement after security review.
