Meet Equals Money

In today’s interconnected global economy, managing and moving money with agility and trust has never been more essential. Equals Money makes it easy to do just that. Founded in 2007 with the vision of giving customers a better deal, Equals Money has evolved into an all-in-one financial platform trusted by more than 30,000 customers and businesses worldwide.

With an intuitive international payment system, employee cards, and multi-currency accounts, everyone from small businesses to Hollywood studios, can spend less time managing finances and more time growing and innovating. Personal consumers can send and spend money globally – simply and cost-effectively.

After two decades, Equals Money continues to redefine how individuals and businesses manage spending and move money across the globe.

The Problem: Overcoming Language Barriers in Global Expansion

As they continued to grow, Equals Money’s expanded product offering unlocked new growth opportunities, particularly in international markets. After initial success expanding from the United Kingdom into the United States, the Equals Money team set their sights on launching in Europe.

However, the diverse set of languages spoken across European countries introduced a new challenge. As Director of Platform Engineering Shane Johnson put it, “We knew we had to expand into multiple languages to scale globally, but with that expansion came the realization that we needed to improve our scalability and terminology across regions.”

To truly succeed in Europe, Equals Money needed to develop a true internationalization strategy, ensuring a seamless customer experience that resonated with customers in their preferred language. This required an innovative translation partner who could develop and scale a translation strategy across content types. Prioritizing both efficiency and quality, Equals Money needed a collaborative workflow for both their design and engineering teams, enabling them to create a consistent multilingual platform experience across different markets.

Why Equals Money Chose LILT

The selection process for Equals Money’s new translation partner was both competitive and extensive, involving multiple teams from across the business. Johnson explained that the evaluation of new vendors required alignment from product, marketing, and senior leadership, among other teams: “It was quite a cross-functional group from the business that chose LILT as the provider because this does not only impact product or engineering.”

Ultimately, the decision came down to four key priorities for Equals Money: language, balancing speed and quality, partnership, and security.

There were a few key things that were important to us. Language, style, and tone were a priority because we wanted to make sure that we didn’t change the way that we were coming across to customers. Speed and quality of delivery were also crucial so that we could make sure that we were still able to deliver at pace. We also wanted to build a partnership with the provider that we chose, and of course, we had to make sure we were fully comfortable with the security protocols in place to protect our customer data.

First, clarity, consistency, and regional relevance were crucial across all languages for Equals Money. With terminology specific to their company, products, and the financial services industry more broadly, the Equals Money team needed a partner who could adapt these terms in a brand-aligned and culturally accurate way. Johnson emphasized, “We’re very particular about how we phrase things and we did not want those nuances lost when translating into a different language.”

Equally important was striking the right balance of speed and quality. As they launch new products and continue their expansion, translation workflows need to be able to keep up without sacrificing the quality of the content. As an innovative company in an industry defined by customer trust, compromising either of these factors was not an option.

For Equals Money, finding a true partner was essential. They needed a translation provider who they could trust to serve as an extension of their team, working toward the same goals and priorities: “We wanted to make sure that we were choosing a partner that understood our business, our needs, and could evolve with us as we grew globally.”

Finally, ensuring that company and customer data was secure in their translation workflows was non-negotiable. Equals Money is regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and is ISO 27001 accredited, meaning that a new solution could only be adopted with a full security sign-off from their security council.

The Solution: Next-Generation AI Efficiency with Human Quality

In the end, Equals Money chose LILT, the leading AI solution for enterprise translation and content creation, to transform its multilingual content strategy. With LILT, Johnson and his team have built a next-generation translation program with AI at the center and crucial human verification steps for guaranteed accuracy and consistency across languages. Within the Verified Translation workflow, unique LILT LLMs generate translation outputs, which are then reviewed by skilled linguists. This human feedback acts as a fine-tuning layer, refining their unique LILT LLMs in real time. This continuous feedback loop allows Equals Money to develop purpose-built translation models that deliver consistency and precision at AI speed and global scale.

We really liked the combination of LILT’s AI engine, which learns our unique style and tone, with the human translators who give us the confidence that our translation has been verified. It allowed us to use AI to streamline operations without losing human quality.

With LILT, Equals Money has translated its customer-facing content, from its in-app experience to white-labeling, marketing materials, and onboarding content, into the three key languages for its business. For larger projects, like the new website launch, LILT’s AI technology enabled fast, high-quality translation within tight timelines, ensuring the team could keep their launch on track: "We worked with LILT on the new website, which was sent with a tight time frame. LILT was brilliant helping us launch it on time in multiple languages.” By leveraging Verified Translation and LILT’s linguist quality assurance service, the team ensured their new website launched with high accuracy and global reach.

Multifaceted connectivity for streamlined workflows

LILT’s suite of over 60 pre-built Connectors enables Equals Money to seamlessly integrate AI-powered translation into their existing tools and workflows. By delivering translation directly into the apps their teams already use, LILT eliminates friction, reduces manual steps, and ensures consistency across all content.

For Equals Money’s product and engineering teams, the GitHub Connector has been game-changing. Developers can send content for quality-guaranteed Verified Translation directly within their repositories, avoiding manual steps and workflow disruption. This seamless integration allows them to launch new features and push product updates globally with greater speed: “With LILT, we know we have everything we need for a global release in one place, so it has allowed us to operate at our usual fast pace.”

Meanwhile, the design team has been able to use LILT’s Figma Connector to design with confidence. By incorporating translation directly into design files, the team can visualize translated content in context throughout the design process. This proactive workflow ensures that designs accommodate multilingual nuances, such as word length or differences in punctuation, from the outset, eliminating the risk of late-stage revisions or multiple design iterations.

Design teams use LILT early in the design process with the Figma Connector. For example, if they’re designing a button, they want to ensure words fit within the button size across all languages we translate into. LILT allows them to get translation quickly, see if the text fits, and adjust the design if necessary to make sure it looks good on the page regardless of the language.

For ad hoc or one-off translation needs outside of these systems, teams can easily log into the LILT Platform to quickly send and receive content for Verified Translation. This flexibility has enabled Equals Money to scale translation processes across teams, maintaining accuracy, consistency, and workflow efficiency, no matter where or how content is created.

Unparalleled security and data privacy standards

In the financial services industry, where data protection and consumer trust are essential, Equals Money carefully vets all new tools and workflows to guarantee the highest level of security for its business and its customers. Safeguarding customer data is critical not only for regulatory compliance but also for upholding industry trust.

It’s vital that we make sure we’re doing everything we can to ensure customers' data is 100% secure.
